March 15, nearly 80 dedicated young people from across Sweden gathered in Norrköping for the Syriac-Aramean Youth Federation in Sweden’s (SAUF) annual congress. This year’s hosts, SAUF-Norrköping Folkets Park, welcomed participants to Folkets Park for a day marked by community, engagement, and hope for the future.

The congress is one of the most significant events within SAUF’s operations, where key decisions are made to shape the federation’s future direction. During the congress, a new board was elected, tasked with leading the federation forward with responsibility and dedication. The newly elected board consists of:

During the annual congress, outgoing board members who chose to step down from their roles were also thanked, including former chairperson Jacob Lahdo, who had held the position since 2020. Through his dedication, determination, and deep love for the youth and his community, Jacob Lahdo exemplified what strong and inspiring leadership means. His contributions not only strengthened SAUF during his tenure but also inspired the next generation of leaders to carry forward the mission of empowering Syriac-Aramean youth in Sweden.

Jacob Lahdo expressed his gratitude for his years as chairman and for the trust he had been given over the years. He shared his appreciation for the experiences, memories, and lifelong friends he gained through his involvement in SAUF. “Through my work in SAUF, I have not only had the opportunity to contribute to the youth movement but also developed and become the person I am today,” said Jacob Lahdo.

The day’s discussions were centered around crucial topics concerning the federation’s role and responsibility in strengthening the identity and position of Syriac-Aramean youth within Swedish society. A shared sentiment among participants was the hope that SAUF will continue to serve as a guiding light for the younger generation and actively work to promote youth rights, opportunities, and participation in society.

The congress was not only a forum for decision-making but also a day filled with joy and solidarity. Through discussions, meetings, and networking, the bonds between local associations were strengthened. The day was marked by a genuine desire to collaborate for a future where young Syriac-Aramean voices have greater influence both within their own culture and in Swedish society.

“This day is not only an important democratic process but also a testament to the strong sense of community and commitment among our youth. We look forward with confidence and hope to continue building a strong platform for young Syriac-Aramean voices in Sweden,” expressed newly elected chairperson Jonas Ergül.

He also took the opportunity to thank everyone for the trust placed in him and the new board. “It is an honor for me to hold such an important position. I look forward to the year ahead with great enthusiasm and curiosity about what we can achieve together,” concluded Jonas Ergül.

SAUF’s work is more relevant than ever. In a time when issues of identity, integration, and participation are in focus, the federation strives to continue being a strong voice for youth. The newly elected board now takes on the mission of leading the federation towards even better times, creating more opportunities for young people to engage, develop, and influence their surroundings.

The congress in Norrköping marked not only an important milestone for SAUF but also a manifestation of the strength and hope that permeate the federation and its members. With renewed energy and a collective will, SAUF moves forward, aiming to continue strengthening and uniting the Syriac-Aramean youth in Sweden.
